The settlement study in Miryagaon which is in Ratnagiri took place for about 8 days in which we studied the different aspects of the village, such as the livelihood of the people of the village, some specific cultural objects, flora and fauna of the village, different types of festivals which take place in village etc.
During the span of this trip we spent majority of our time making sections of the house, understanding the routine of various people of the village, comprehending the economy of the village. For this purpose we were divided into groups of five to six, where in each group was aiming to understand these different aspects of the Miryagaon.
This was a 4 week module, so after the trip ended we were assigned to make the ginormous map of the village, where we tried to add the layers of the interior of the village, vegetation, animals, construction details etc.
Week 3 was designing a shrine for sea God or a pavilion, basically where people can gather or maybe, it might serve a different purpose. We also had to write a text as to why or what is the reason for designing the building. Physical models of the building in 1:100/1:50 and 1:200 scale were also made.
Week 4 was making the construction details for the structure we made, showing the joineries which were present in the structure, where the foundations will be placed, site location etc. By the end of the module we learned many important things such as how to locate the the structure in the site, how the contours of a elevated landscape is made.
This module was also a very fun experience where we got to know how other classmates think before designing the structure. There were 40 different models and concepts which gave me a wide spectrum and understanding of conceptual thinking.
THE FOLLOWING WAS MY TEXT FOR WEEK 3:
Just like Mahapurush aarti which takes place every year on 4 of may, there will be a aarti on Wednesday in the first week of December every year to impress the sea god. There will be a competition on this day where the participants have to impress the sea god by catching 5 fishes or crustaceans, which will be weighed later after the time limit of the competition ends. There will be 1 winner. The duration of this competition will be from 10am to 5pm. Each year the fishes and crustaceans caught in this competition will be different. After weighing the catch and announcing the winner, the catch caught by the participants will be handed over to the people who will then cook it for the rest of the village for dinner. The aarti which will take place in the morning will be from 7am to 9am. After the aarti there will be breakfast for all the people. There will be dance performances and singing performances, which will be taking place after the breakfast. There will also be games for children. Also some play will take place. All this will be happening in a stretch of 11 am to 5 pm.
I am making this space so that entire village can reunite and have a day which they look forward to every year other than Mahapurush festival. In this space there will be a hall and a kitchen. Kitchen will be on level 2. The cooking after collecting the catch will be cooked in this kitchen. Building this space is also an attempt in promoting fishing in the village which is almost forgotten by many people or is not practiced by people anymore.
Thus I am making this space so that people and celebrate one more festival just like Mahapurush festival and many others and also to promote fishing in the village.
