RETHINKING SHOPPING CENTRE:

The site that studied was mainly Indraprastha shopping centre and its vicinty.

documented site plan of the overall site.

section cutting from SV ROAD to Indraprastha shopping centre to Borivali railway station.

PROBLEMS OF THE SITE:

  1. There are no seating spaces in the shopping centre.

  2. People are most likely to buy from the street vendors and hawkers and not go to the shopping centre (according the shop owners and workers of the Indraprastha shopping centre.)

OPPORTUNITIES OF THE SITE:

1. Location of the shopping centre, it is situated in between two major infrastructural datums of the city, SV ROAD and Borivali railway station.

2. A mall largely for the middle class public which is more inclusive and affordable (this is because there a huge number of smaller shops placed one after another and opposite to each other, which gives the feeling of being in an intimate bazaar, unlike a typical mall where there are bigger and comparatively much lesser shops.)

3. People tend to walk through the Indraprastha to go to the Borivali railway station.

CONECEPTUAL IDEAS:

EXISTING:

Indraprastha shopping centre has a compund wall dividing the railway station and the mall itself.

PROPOSED:

Opening up the edge so that is becomes a transition space between the shopping centre and the railway station, which will increase the transitional capacity.

Indraprastha is currently, largely behind residential and commercial buildings and it is rapidly becoming inactive, majorly because of the street hawkers and vendors according to the owners and workers of the shops of Indraprastha.

From this the question arises,

What is the architecture of revitalization of the shopping centre which seamlessly invites people and helps rekindle and restore the influx of people ?

Can it create a public interface which acts as a pause point for the urban public ?

What are the ways to achieve it ?
